Why Indian Spices Are Getting Rejected Abroad — And What It Means for You

Several consignments of Indian spices have been flagged at international borders. These rejections signal deeper concerns — and they matter to you too.

India is the world's largest producer and exporter of spices. But in recent years, several consignments have been flagged or outright rejected at international borders. These rejections signal deeper concerns about food safety, chemical overuse, and quality control — concerns that should matter to Indian consumers too.

Pesticide residues exceeding safe limits

Countries like the US, EU and Japan have strict Maximum Residue Limits, often lower than India's. When exporters fail to meet them, the entire consignment is rejected.

  • In 2022, Indian chilli exports were blocked by the EU due to triazophos, a pesticide banned in Europe.
  • In 2023, turmeric shipments were flagged in the US for lead chromate, a toxic colouring agent sometimes used to brighten colour artificially.

Unlike fruits and vegetables, spices aren't washed, peeled, or boiled before use. They go straight into your food as-is. So if chemical residues remain, they go into the dish — and eventually, into your body.

How you can stay one step ahead

Labels can be confusing. Claims like "natural" don't always mean much. What matters is how the food was grown and whether the people selling it are willing to show you.

  1. Certified organic — where it counts. All our products are PGS-India Green certified, marked clearly on the label.
  2. Lab tests — shared openly. We send our spices for independent lab testing and share the results. If a batch doesn't meet our internal standards — even if it's legally allowed — we don't sell it.
  3. Grown without chemicals. Composting, mulching, crop rotation, and natural pest controls.
  4. Know the source. Everything we sell comes directly from the farm. No middlemen, no mixing of batches.

Clean food is not a claim. It's a responsibility — and it begins with how the soil is treated.
